Subject: HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS ACQUIRES SENATOR BOB DOLE’S
New York, NY (April 13, 2004) HarperCollins has acquired world rights for a World War II memoir by former Senate Republican Leader and decorated veteran Bob Dole. Executive Editor Tim Duggan negotiated the deal with Dole’s attorney, Robert B. Barnett of Williams & Connolly LLP.
A Veteran Remembers will be Senator Dole’s most personal book to date. Drawing upon the letters he exchanged with his family during the war, his own memories and opinions, as well as the words and actions of other veterans, Dole will frame the mindset of his generation. In the unvarnished, straight-talking style for which he’s known, Senator Dole will describe the battles and the grave wounds he received as a G.I.; his long but triumphant recovery; and his vision of America, which he molded into one of the most effective public-service careers of our time.
"For years, friends and family members have asked me to consider writing a book about my World War II experiences. And for years, I told them that I was not quite ready,” says Senator Dole. “Last year, my sister discovered all of my World War II letters to my family and their responses. With these first person accounts, I think now may be the right time to do such a project. If this book brings additional honor and recognition to all those who served and sacrificed during World War II, on the battlefields and at home, then it will be worth it. If this book speaks to the disabled, their challenges, and most importantly, their great accomplishments, then in some small measure, I will have done my job. I am looking forward to the effort and grateful to the fine people of HarperCollins for working with me."
To be published in 2005, the 60th anniversary of the end of the war, A Veteran Remembers will reflect not only on the war and politics of the 1940s, but will offer readers Senator Dole’s invaluable insights and outlook on each succeeding decade -- decades that had their own unique challenges and rewards and that speak to many generations of readers.
“Bob Dole is not only one of the greatest statesmen of our time,” says Jane Friedman, President and CEO of HarperCollins Publishers Worldwide, “he’s also a wartime hero whose story of uncommon courage and persistence is incredibly inspiring. His is a remarkably moving story, filled with humor and heart.”
The longest-serving Republican Leader in Senate history at twelve years, Bob Dole is considered by many to be the most influential and admired World War II veteran living today. While serving 35 years in Congress, Dole was the Chairman of the Republican National Committee under the turbulent
Presidency of Richard Nixon, the Republican nominee for Vice President with Gerald Ford, and the
1996 Republican nominee for President. He has authored two books on presidential and political humor, both national bestsellers. As Chairman of the World War II Memorial Committee, Dole led the way in raising $180 million to build and maintain the World War II Memorial on the Washington Mall, which is scheduled to be dedicated in May, 2004.
