FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (212) 207-7583
HARPERCOLLINS TO PUBLISH MEMOIR BY
MIRAMAX CO-CHAIRMAN HARVEY WEINSTEIN
New York, NY (May 13, 2004) - HarperCollins Publishers today announced that it has acquired North American and United Kingdom publication rights to a memoir by Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein, one of the most influential and widely-recognized figures in the film industry today. The still untitled book will provide readers with an ultimate close-up look at the evolution of Miramax Films into one of the great Hollywood success stories.
Harvey Weinstein will donate all of his profits from the book to three charities: The Robin Hood Foundation, Paul Newman's The Hole In The Wall Gang Camp and amfAR.
The memoir will trace the lives of the Weinstein brothers from their lower-middle class roots in Queens, New York, through the founding of Miramax (named after their parents, Miriam and Max) and will chronicle the premier independent movie studio's triumphant and sometimes turbulent history.
“I am so pleased that HarperCollins will be working with Harvey Weinstein on this book - the poignant, exciting, funny and brilliant story of two brothers who turned their dream into a legend,” said Jane Friedman, President and CEO of HarperCollins Publishers. “Harvey is someone we read about every day. Now, in this book, we will read the true story behind Miramax’s amazing success, as only Harvey can tell it.” The book will be edited by HarperCollins Executive Editor David Hirshey, and is expected to be published by HarperCollins Publishers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India in 2006. The deal was negotiated by Friedman and Weinstein’s agent, Jennifer Rudolph Walsh of the William Morris Agency.
"We are very grateful for the chance to have built a business based on our passion -- the world of movies," said Weinstein. "Working with Jane, David and the entire Harper Collins team on this book offers a great opportunity to share many of the lessons I've learned about the business world and the entertainment industry over the past 25 years.”
