HARPERCOLLINS ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF P.S.™,
A “BEHIND THE PAGES” PROGRAM FOR PERENNIAL TRADE PAPERBACKS
Insights, Interviews &More
New York, NY (July 29, 2004) HarperCollins announced today that its Perennial imprint is launching a new trade paperback program called P.S.. Titles in this program will contain an additional section at the back of the book with behind-the-pages insights, interviews and more. The extra content in this section will take these titles beyond traditional reprinting and offers readers added value with their paperback purchase.
Similar to DVDs which regularly include outtakes and behind-the-scenes footage from feature films, each P.S. section will be unique; the extra 16-pages will offer readers an in-depth look at both the author and their book. The P.S. section will use interviews, essays, articles, photos and illustrations to explore the authors’ sources of inspiration. P.S. may also contain topics related to the book’s subject matter and show the impact a book has had since its publication.
“P.S. was conceived by our HarperCollins UK colleagues and we immediately fell in love with the idea of giving our readers more. We are always looking for ways to be innovative and help our authors reach a wider readership. P.S. will do just that,” said Michael Morrison, Executive Vice President of HarperCollins.
In the United States, P.S. will first appear in ten titles being published this Fall, including the critically acclaimed THE WAY THE CROW FLIES, the national bestseller OVER THE EDGE OF THE WORLD, Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2003 FOUR SPIRITS, and the highly praised THE LOS ANGELES DIARIES. Each P.S. book will be identified with a logo on both its front and back covers, and the P.S. section itself will appear at the end of the book and have shaded edges to make it immediately apparent that it is a Perennial P.S. title.
The early reaction from booksellers has been overwhelmingly positive, "Finally, all the information tucked into the book that you always wanted - - what was the author influenced by or thinking about when she wrote the book? What else did she write? The perfect book club aid," commented Leah Rex, a fiction buyer for Borders Books and Music. Susan Perry, Director of Collection Development, Ingram Book Group agreed that, "the program provides the story behind the story in an engaging and accessible format...conveniently located within the book itself.” Finally, Ty Wilson the buyer for Copperfields in Sonoma County, California thought that, "P.S. will draw you closer to the author. I see it enhancing the reading experience without explaining the book, lending extra depth to a reader's understanding of the work."
