New York, NY (September 30, 2004) - HarperCollins Publishers today announced that Christopher Goff, Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, has been promoted to Senior Vice President and General Counsel effective January 1, 2005. This position is currently held by James Fox who will assume the role of Counsel until his retirement in 2005.

“Jim has been at the heart and soul of HarperCollins for the past 10 years in his role as General Counsel,” said Glenn D’Agnes, Chief Operating Officer of HarperCollins Publishers. “He has played an integral role in the company’s continued success, working closely with editors, authors and agents as a true professional. His expertise, wit and his unique historical perspective of this company have been a real help to me. I will miss him in the General Counsel role, but am happy that he is staying on to help our legal team accomplish its goals over the next year.”

“We are fortunate to be in a position to make this seamless transition in the leadership of our Legal Department from one outstanding person to another,” D’Agnes continued. “Chris Goff has the right blend of experience, professionalism and legal expertise to be successful in this critical role. After working with Chris for several years, it is clear to me that his unique talents will be a great benefit to our business.”

He has been part of the company’s Legal department since 1972. “I feel privileged to have been with Harper for so many years, particularly over the past seven years as the company has grown and thrived,” said Fox. “Chris has been a vital player in many of the company’s key legal matters over the past 15 years, and I know that HarperCollins will benefit as he brings his keen intelligence and legal skills to his new responsibilities.”

Goff joined HarperCollins in 1989, handling all legal affairs for the Children’s Book Group, Zondervan and Lippincott (then owned by HarperCollins). He was named Deputy General Counsel in 1997.
